Or just call her the Baroness!

Issue 202 hit the stands yesterday, so I thought the pencils to the cover might be a timely addition. Enjoy.

OK the title alone will probably get me on every FBI watchlist available (as if my internet searches haven’t done that already), but I’m getting ready, for in a month I’ll be at the HeroesCon in Charlotte. Every year two things happen there– they have an auction of original art to help off-set the cost of the show, and Shelton Drum (organizer and owner of Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find) never remembers my name. I figure if I start pulling in a little money at the auction, maybe… just maybe, he’ll start to recognize me and call me “Shane? Sam? Shamus? Sean? (God no!)” — well it would be a start.

Below is the pencil work for the image I’m putting in the auction this year, to kickstart that recognition from Shelton. The piece is larger than I normally work, at 11 x 17; and those of you who know me will vouch that I usually draw my pages, sketches, commissions, and other auction images at 8.5 x 11. If you’re in the Charlotte area the first weekend of June, come by the show and bid on it.

I’ll post the inks and gray washes for this image as completed… that is if I don’t end up doing them the night before I leave for the show! ;¬P

Remember, Shelton knowing me is half the battle!

Pencils for the HeroesCon auction!

As you may have read here a few weeks ago, I’m participating in a fund raising event for  John “The Cran” Randall. Mr. Randall had to close his comic shop, Land of Cran Comics, after being diagnosed with lymphoma. To help pay his mounting medical expenses family, friends, and patrons organized a benefit auction. That auction starts today Friday, March 25th. Remember though, they are also auctioning off artwork by…

  • Robert Atkins (GI Joe)
  • Darryl Banks (Green Lantern)
  • Jeremy Dale (GI Joe, Skyward, Absolute Zeros)
  • Todd Dezago (Tellos, Perhapanauts, Super Hero Squad)
  • Tom Feister (GI Joe Origins, Ex Machina)
  • Gene Gonzales (Pin-Up Artist)
  • Scott James (Mutants and Masterminds)
  • Comfort Love and Adam Withers (Mutants and Masterminds, the Uniques)
  • Todd Nauck (Young Justice, Wild Guard and Amazing Spider-Man)
  • Joe Pekar (Pin-Up artist)
  • Craig Rousseau (Perhapanauts, X-Men First Class)
  • Neil Gaiman (Stardust, American Gods, Anansi, Sandman, Black Orchid)

Additionally Dark Horse, IDW, DC Comics have donated items, and there are even some movie props.

You can still read more about what’s going on, and being done for John, at the blog Cran Man. I hope you all will check out the items available, and remember that your purchase goes to help out a guy who has served, and is loved by, his community. The auction they organized in his honor attests to that.

My thanks to everyone who bids, and passes this post along those who might.

Something for the Dads-

March 21, 2011

Double whammy this week-

Here’s the envelope art that went along with my charity sketch for the recently mentioned “Cran the Man” auction. Don’t know if they saved it, but perhaps the winning purchase will get it as a bonus? If not- sorry- I have no control over that.

This was about 3″ tall, so you’re seeing it slightly larger than actual size.

Also, here’s the first cover I’ve done for the classic series. I wanted to give it a classic “pulp” feel, I hope it worked to some extent. If it makes fans happy to know– this is a BWS-free issue! 🙂

Here it is, sans text –

Who dat?

Here are the original pencils from that cover…

The first draft was a slightly more risqué version. Uh- I need a minute... alone.

As some of you may or may not know, the little “x”s that you see in the cover are indications for inkers to fill those areas in with solid black. It’s partly a time saver for me, but traditionally it also helped to keep brushes/quills from getting clogged with graphite while trying to ink over shaded pencils. The last bit doesn’t apply to us, since Gary is in Scotland where he prints out a copy of the image onto a board then inks that. He never sees the actual pencil in person, so there’s no risk of ruining his pens with graphite gunk, no possibility of losing the image in transit, or of it getting damaged in the journey. That’s the benefit and loss of modern comic making.

I don’t know how apparent it is, maybe I missed the mark, but the cobra sigil is supposed to be visible in the flames of the fireplace. I thought is was worth a shot. Gary and James worked really hard on this with me, for as with most covers, this was on a tight deadline. Hope everyone enjoys it.

Have a great week everyone.

Breast Cancer Month

October 11, 2009

So as I’m sure most people have heard, October is breast cancer month. Now I could make some smart comment about saving breasts, but this isn’t the place for that.

A few months ago I got an email from a guy named Jason Gavin, who was asking comic artists to donate sketches for an ebay auction intended to raise money for breast cancer research. It turns out that his mother and his sister were diagnosed with breast cancer only a couple of months apart, so in honor of them he started the marlabeabenefit and this website. There’s a section on it with all the sketches that are being auctioned off on ebay thru his seller name “marlabeabenefit”. The auction begins on Monday, October 12th, and will last 7 days. Take a moment to see what’s available, and please consider bidding on something that takes your fancy. Remember it’s for charity and a great cause. As an incentive, below is the sketch of the Baroness (from GI Joe/Cobra) that I did for the auction.

UPDATE: the auction has started, so here’s a link to my sketch of the Baroness for anyone crazy enough to bid on it.

Again there are a ton of other sketches to bid on, so check them out as well-

Remember- bidding ends on October 19th! Good luck!
